Bob Welch - “Ebony Eyes” (1977)

Loved this song when I was 12, but, wow, no idea this video existed.1

Where to begin?

Appreciate 17-year-old Valerie Bertinelli—adorable, hand-cuffed to a man in a fez, and seated adjacent to the creepiest 70s-guy-in-a-mask since Phantom of the Paradise. And, that weird fish-lip thing Bob does during the chorus? I definitely need to start doing that a lot.

Also, now that you’ve watched this? Good luck getting the song out of your head.2

(You can’t see it, but I just did that fish-lip thing right after I said that. Then I looked over my creepy 70s sunglasses. And then I danced with your hand-cuffed teenage girlfriend while a guy in a mask stared at us. Seriously. Please watch this so I can know whether it’s a mescaline flashback.)

  1. And, yes, you totally recognize that voice from “Sentimental Lady,” which he originally wrote and performed during his brief tenure in Fleetwood Mac. ↩

  2. Perhaps, because of the melody’s similarity to Driveshaft’s much later hit, “You All Everybody.” ↩
