Remember how excited Navin got when he saw his name in the phonebook for the first time? What you might call “The Navin Johnson Effect?”
Yeah, I think wikipedia is the new white pages. Makes something feel so official.
Brady’s Bits:
In 10th grade (1982) the Gulf High equivalent of the pep club sold crappy painters caps with the school’s name and a visual facsimile of the less-than-distinctive pirate guy that freakin’ half the schools in Florida claimed as a mascot.
Only there was a small typo that wasn’t noticed until the printed hats were being decanted from their giant shipping box. Which meant it was too late to do anything but shrug and sell them.
So, for over a year, hundreds of young people walked around Pasco County wearing cheap paper caps that said, “BUCANEERS.”
And, yes, I preferred to pronounce it, “boo-suh-NEERS.” Because I thought it sounded like a delicious French appetizer. Instead of an illiterate green pirate.
