Wow. What a difference a few decisions can make. Imagine if they’d kept the giant strings, background ladies, and too-loud doubling/harmony. My Christ, the strings. By the end, they sound like they’re ready to invade Poland.

It wasn’t until I watched the Wings for Wheels documentary (BTR section of which is embedded above for as long as it stays up on YT) that I really heard how the parts fit together. The little riffs, the glockenspiel, the mixed-low acoustic guitar and thump-thump bass that drive the verses, the organ splashes, and Boom Carter’s impossible drum fills on the break.
This song’s a fucking swiss clock, and it still gives me shivers every time I hear it. Which is a lot.
