“…2…3…FOW!”
Great news. Looks like there’s a new GbV record1.
AND, 7-11 is selling it for a buck! Nothin’ wrong with that.
Man. Seems like forever since breakfast.
Classic Lineup
$20-ish, in navy, red or black
So.
A New Thing Every Day begins.
This morning’s entry is a play on a popular theme (first names of some famous players on a sports team set in Helvetica with no other identifying marks, in order to skirt legal issues, I’d hazard), but with Guided By Voices. I can’t think of a better starting five.
Bonus points to true fans of the band who get the visual gag [detailed image here].

Guided by Voices - “Game of Pricks” and “Smothered in Hugs” (Live, Minneapolis, Oct. 2010)
Lordy.
The classic lineup. The Kick. The Chant. The Salty Salute sign. Toby still being all calm. Mitch still slamming it so goddamned hard while rocking the ubiquitous smoke.1 Greg still in The Striped Pants. It’s all there.
These are men who love rock music. Just like us, my friends.
Boner, boner, boner.

Treat yourself to a viewing of Watch Me Jumpstart—if only to see Mitch Mitchell smoke a cigarette while brushing his teeth. Yes. ↩
Go ahead: try and guess the name of my MiFi.
You’ll never get it. Never in a million years.
Guided by Voices - “Smothered in Hugs” (Bee Thousand, Scat Records, 1994)
This is my favorite song.
That is all. Thank you. Carry on.
But, the word got out
And it was really such a pity
For the judges and the saints
And the textbook committee
Decided you should be left out—
Not even mentioned
Another hidden gem from the 1,100-strong Robert Pollard Megacatalog.
Notable for a style, length, and shuffly, mid-tempo urgency that throws back to the classic trio—as well as packing a chorus that soars like any of the best 5% of anything The Captain’s released.
Without them I’d go through withdrawal
I’d hear the talking through the wall
Without them I’m not brave at all
Discovered via the Seriously-No-Really-You-MUST-Have-This GbV fan compilation, Empties Crushed and Fired Away, an extremely thoughtful and 100% awesome 28-song collection, lovingly curated by Matthew Perpetua, creator of the delightful and influential Fluxblog.
Of Empties Crushed, Matthew said:
This is a compilation of Guided By Voices songs — well, some are technically credited to Robert Pollard or some other “side project” name — and it is intended for newer fans. It does not contain any music from Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, Under The Bushes Under The Stars, or the greatest hits record, in part because it was originally intended for a person who has heard most of that music. You could take this disc as a next step after those entry-level albums, or just let it be an introductory thing, because it’s full of really great, accessible tunes that sell the band about as well as the actual hits collection does. That’s kinda the thing with Pollard/GBV — you can fill up one cd with killer songs, but then you just have several other discs worth of great leftovers. Pollard’s cup runneth over, and over, and over, and over.
Far as I’m concerned, ECaFA represents the cream of the crop from Bob’s ridiculously prolific (and, often as not, ridiculously C-plus) post-97 oeuvre.
If you gave up on everything after (the original and maybe-best-poppy-Pollard-song-ever) “Teenage FBI,” give Bob another throw. The man still makes with the magic.
Since Matthew’s old link is long dead, Daddy’s happy to share: get it now (103 MB zip).
This song does subsequently rock.
Guided by Voices - “Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox/Circus World” Demo (To Trigger a Synapse boot; rel. late 90s; rec. early 90s)
This is one of those KFG posts. You know the kind.
- If you’re all “meh” about GbV (±99.9%)? Well, you know. You’ll still be all meh. But.
- If (like me, Scoots, Jas-Per, and maybe 4 other people), you’re all “GEE-BEE-VEE! GEE-BEE-VEE! GEE-BEE-VEE!” (±0.1%)? You will freak to hear this.
From the To Trigger a Synapse bootleg (and via the must-[subscribe/listen] “Wilfully Obscure” blog), arrives this lovely demo1 of three songs from Guided by Voices’s outstanding 1992 pre-breakthrough album, Propeller.2
Starts with, appropriately enough, “Over the Neptune”—the very tune that serves as the source of the titular Guided by Voices chant. Which chant I’ve personally shouted to Budweisery hoarseness at the glorious half-dozen shows I was ever able to catch.
Gold. And, for what it’s worth, it’s now become clearer that my all-consuming GbV renaissances appear to be settling into an entirely manageable quarterly schedule. It’s like menses for drunks.3

And, yes. The idea that Bob made “demos” that are even more fidelity-impaired than his actual records is hilarious and awesome. ↩
-
Fellow Zero Point One Percenters: do yourselves a favor and check out some of the ridiculous number of one-off covers that Pete and the guys made for Propeller. Wow. Lots more at The Propeller Gallery. ↩

“Thiz iz a song from th’ Budweisery Hoarsness record—it’s called, ‘Menses for Drunks!’ One-Two-Three-FOH! [kick]” ↩
