New Order - “Temptation” (Live; BBC; 1984)
Which is not to say that Barney was above getting kinda coked-up in weird-ass Pride Day shorts as Hooky stirred the pot up in the double-digit frets while rockin’ a creepy wife-beater.
Go ahead: explain the 80s.
I’ll be here. Take your time.
Please don’t let me hit the ground.
If you’re more obsessed with t-shirts than Hooky’s bass magic, get a fucking room.
Find a little joy already.
Radiohead - “Ceremony” (New Order cover; Live; Thumbs Down webcast; 2007)
I never get sick of this. What a rocking and affectionate take on one of my all-time favorite songs.
It sounds like they’ve each been playing this song for years and and each knows the parts, the style, and the unique vibe in their hearts.
Just perfect.
This is why events unnerve me,
They find it all, a different story,
Notice whom for wheels are turning,
Turn again and turn towards this time,
All she ask’s the strength to hold me,
Then again the same old story,
World will travel, oh so quickly,
Travel first and lean towards this time.Oh, I’ll break them down, no mercy shown,
Heaven knows, it’s got to be this time,
Watching her, these things she said,
The times she cried,
Too frail to wake this time.Oh I’ll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it’s got to be this time,
Avenues all lined with trees,
Picture me and then you start watching,
Watching forever, forever,
Watching love grow, forever,
Letting me know, forever.
New Order’s “Temptation” single came out May 11, 1982. Here’s an amazing 1984 performance in the BBC studios—fascinating how similar this is to the slightly later “Perfect Kiss” video in some ways!

I suppose I’d be alone in thinking it’d be a great idea for the next Squarespace song to be a New Order (ca. 1985) parody.
Actually, I’m not even sure I think that’s a particularly good idea. Hm.
Anyhoo. Hey, New Order parody.

That’s me again this morning. Now 45.

Join me here.
Want to pretend like we’re hanging out this afternoon? Me, too.
So, right now, go play this 9-minute (“alternate 12-inch”) version of “Temptation” on repeat for an hour while you type about managing expectations.
Got it? Cool.
Welcome. Comfortable? Want some seltzer or something? Sure. So. Should we listen to “Temptation” again? Really? Okay. No, totally. Me, too.
Fucking, yes: me, too.
Radiohead - “Ceremony” (New Order cover)
I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of watching this.

Now, I’m thinking that there may be better a use for my time this morning than emailing Apple to request more granular Date tags in iTunes — so that I can listen to all my versions of “Ceremony” in chronological release order.
Jesus, being a cautionary tale can be exhausting.
I’m at a juncture in life where I am now comfortable declaring this fey bit of British sadpop as one of my all-time favorite songs.
When Sara and Ev’s bridal party walked down the aisle to a gentle, slowed-down arrangement of this on acoustic guitar and cello, I just about bawled.
